PRICE OF TOBACCO.
110 PER CENT RISE SINCE 1914. REPORT OP ' BRITISH COMMITTEE. By Telegraph.—Press Assk.—Copyrltftt, Received Feb. 20, 8.5 ,pm. London, Feb. 20. The report of the committee appointed under the Profiteering Act to inquire into the prices of tobacco deals mainly with the operations of the Imperial Tobacco Company, which, it is believed, controls sixty per cent of Britain's tobacco. The committee points out that prices have risen 110 per cent since 1014, but the duty has ■ risen about 122 per cent. It finds no evidence that the Company's operations contributed in any way to the rise in price. The committee refrains from suggesting any safeguards against a monopoly, but urges the regulation and publication of profits of all combinations. The committee, also urges the Government to take powers to protect the public against, a detrimental monopoly. The report does not deal with the collateral companies in the Dominions. —Aus.-N.Z.
