DR. BARNARDO'S HOMES.
A WONDERFUL JUBILEE. For fifty-three years Dr. Barnardo's Homes have fought for the children of the slums against the powers of ignorance and selfisnness. To-day they stand unquestioned as the best and most effective social agency for dealing with destitute and sick children. In all those years they have never turned down an appeal on behalf of a homeless, suffering boy or girl, and a total of BKftOO have been rescued and given a training which set their feet firmly on the road to sucThis work has been economically carried out. It, is a startling fact that this child rescue agency, in its 53 yours' fight for the derelict "boys and girls of the Empire, spent less than one day's cost of the Great War. And to celebrate the Jubilee of the Homes, the Honorary Director asks for a national thank-offer-ing with which to complete the equipment of the homes for their part in the social reconstruction. The sum asked for would have been swallowed up by the war in about forty minutes. It will ba devoted to the saving and building-up of young lives that will prove of the greatest possible value to the nation. The celebration scheme includes a naval training home for the Merchant Service: completion of the boys' garden city; removal of the technical training homes from the East End of London to the country; a training farm for older girls who desire to work upon the land; a training farm for boys; a training home j wherein crippled children may be rendered practically self-supporting; a sanatorium for tuberculous boys and girls; and a hostel in London for ''Old Barnardo Boys and Girls." The last-men-tioned will provide for those who are working in London anil have no home of their own, a refuge in the hour of need, and wise and sympathetic counsel when required. Sirs. Dockrill is organising a house-to-house collection in New Plymouth in aid of these splendid and famous Homes. New Plymouth has always responded liberally 1.0 Sirs. Dockrill's previous appeals on behalf of the cause, and in view of the fact that last year's collection had to he abandoned on account of illness, it is to be hoped that the result this time will prove a "record," worthy of the Jubilee we have briefly described. Donations or offers of help will be gratefully received by Mrs. Dockrill at h«r address in Eliot Street.
