ADVENTURES IN MOROCCO.
Kaid General Sir Harry Maclean, whose death at the age of 72 was announced a few days ago, was a subaltern in the British Army stationed at Gibraltar when he paid a visit one day in 1876 to Tangier, where the British Minister asked him if he wonld accept the post of instructor to the Sultan's troops. Sir Harry immediate! v resigned his commission, returned to Tangier, and became the Sultan's right-hand man. His most famous exploit was his capture by the brigand 'Raisuli in 1907 when sent on a mission for the Sultan to negotiate a peace and pardon for the outlaw. Ho was kept in imprisonment for seven months while Raisuli was trying to come to terms over tlie ransom' to be paid. His hiding-place was always being clian"ed, and lie suffered extraordinary privaA ransom of £20,000 was paid for liiin. His salary as instructor to the Moorish Army was said to be £7600, and he 'became Moorish commander-in-chief He introduced bagpipes and the hansomcab into Morocco. In 1901 he was made K.0.M.G.-for: services rendered to the British Government. •
