A traveller put down a handbag containing jewels valued at £70130 in order to pay for his ticket, and when he looked down he found an empty bag had teen substituted. There is no clue.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE LINER OPHIR. London, Feb. 16. The Admiralty has decided to sell the former liner Ophir, which took the present King on his colonial tour in 1901. Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn, CORPORAL KING'S CASE. London, Feb. 18. Corporal King, who was arrested in a house at Pimlico, where, it was supposed stolen goods were concealed, appeared at Westminster Court and was remanded on a bail of £SO. A detective gave evidence that, the prisoner said the landlady aroused him declaring that burglars were entering the window, upon which King put a cartridge in his revolver. BATTLESHIPS FOR SALE. London, Feb. I'd. The Pall Mall Gazette state? that tho Admiralty has planned a further drastic clearance of battleships, leaving only those armed with 13in and loin guns. The latest ships listed for sale include ] the Collingwood, Neptune, St. Vincent, Hercules, Colossus, Bellerophon, carrying 12in guns, which are officially regarded as of no further use. The navy is now training at ranges-beyond 20,000 yards (11 miles). DEARER POSTAL RATES. Received Feb. IS, 3 p.m. London, Feb. 17. The Postmaster-General announces an increase in the parcel post rates, and possiblv in letter rates, to meet a demand for an all round increase in the wages of postal employees.—Times Service.
