South Africa is in the throes of a political, industrial, and commercial upheaval. Merchants arc hard hit by banking restrictions and the exchange chaos. From every quarter there are threats of strikes for higher wages and better conditions. Nationalists in the general flection campaign are assiduously preaching Republicanism, while Socialists and Bolshevist; are endcavorng to r>tir up unrest among the native. - The mining industry has. n prosperous outlook with gold d present level, but it is crippled v/itii strikes.
