Crowds thronged the streets of all the towns and villages awaiting the returns. When it seemed a re-union with Denmark was assured, the Schleswigers made a festival. I [Sehleswig is a province of Prussia, isituated between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The inhabitants of Sehleswig give special attention to cattlebreeding, though many other industries flourish, e.g., iron foundries, -loth, tobacco and sugar factories, distilleries and shipbuilding. The 1910 census gave the population of Sehleswig as 1,619,673. The area is 7338 square miles. Sehleswig had representation both in the Prussian Imperial Diet and in the Prussian House of Representatives. Sehleswig, long an object of contention between Danes and Germans, became a Danish possession in the eleventh century, and later an independent State under Danish suzerainty. About the end of the fourteenth century it was united to Holstein. ,!n 1840-50, Schleswig-Holstein unsuccessfully rebelled against Denmark, but in 1864 they were wrested from the latter country by Austria and Prussia. Two years later, in 1806, Prussia, after hor victory over Austria, incorporated the two duchies in her dominions. Under the terms of the Peace Treaty it was provided that a plebiscite should be taken to decide the future of Sehleswig.]
