NEW TERMINAL PORT SUGGESTED. AUCKLAND INSTEAD OF SYDNEY. ' By Telegraph.~Press Association. Napier, Last Night. What would seem a most important matter to New Zealand at the present time was discussed by a Herald representative with Mr. J. B. Clarkson, who is well known to busings people all over New Zealand. Mr- Clarkson pointed out that the New Zealand Government is plying £30,000 a year to the Union Steamship Company for the Vancouver tuall root*, and that next month it woulif be necessary for a renewal of the arrangement* in connection with the payment Of the subsidy The point for consideration is the terminal port for the service At present Sydney is the port, and Mr. Clarkson is strongly of opinion that Jft .should be changed to Auckland in view of the great possibility of ships being delayed in Australia on account of industrial troubles. The fjict that Australia contributes nothing to the subsidy is also worthy of consideration. It was considered doubtful by Mr. Clarkson that New Zealand has benefited to the extent of £30,000 during the past year, owing to many delays, and he was of opinion tl at Australian people wishing to travel by the routs should come across to Auckland by the inter-colonial steamers. By making Auckland the terminal port and provisioning vessels there tradespeople would no doubt benefit considerably. In May last Mr. Clarkaon diec.isscd the matter with Sir Robert Borden and the Minister of Trade And Commerce at Ottawa, both of whom were strongly in favor of Auckland being made the terminal point for the All Red route, nnd it aurclv behoves the Government of New Zealand to review the josition.
