A £IOOO WAGER.
ONE PARTY BACKS OUT. STATEMENT BY MISS MACK. When Miss Louise Mask, the war correspondent, recently climbed the Tarwua, Ranges, she won a wager of £IOOO made with a gentleman who thought ehe eould not accomplish the climb. Miss Mack promised the money to the Returned Soldiers' Association, but, as stated in yesterday's Daily News, the other party to the wager claims that Miss Mack did not perform her part of the contract, "being carried over the Ranges instead of walking."
Miss Mack, who is at present staying at the Mountain House, said last night: "The wager has not been repudiated. The gentleman acknowledge* the wager, but is trying to get out of paying it. The statement that I was carried over the Tararuas is absolutely incorrect. Mr." Knox and his daughter were with me all the time. I walked every step of the way down to the whare on the other side of the Ranges. I am hoping that publlo opinion will make the gentleman pay th* wager."
