DEFENCE OF BORDER STATES. POSITION IN THE SOUTH. * By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Paris, Jan. 21. The policy which is emerging from the Supreme Council appears to be the Allied defence of the border States oi Finland, Livonia, Courland, Lithuania, and Poland, as well as, in the Caucasus, of the Republic of Georgia and Azerbaijan. If the Soviet leaves the Caucasus undisturbed these republics will be an effective buffer between the Bolsheviks and Turkey, and bar the road to Persia and India. Otherwise the Allies will support the republics with armed force. The latest telegrams from South Russia state that Denikin's force have nowhere collapsed, though outnumbered Preparations are being made strongly io defend the Crimea and the Odessa area. Much depends on the attitude of tha Kukan Cossacks, who are mobilisdng in force. The Bolsheviks are offering them peace and independence. The Cossack cavalry is opposing the advance of four Bolshevik columns over the Don River. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
