PERSONAL.
Since the resignation of Mr J, B. Hinc from the Ministry, the portfolio of Internal Affairs has been taken over by Sir Francis Bell. After an absence of about 10 years from New Zealand, Sir Francis Boys, who during most of the war period has occupied the position of Director of Meal Supplies in the Ministry of Food in London, has returned to Christchurch.
Commandant and Mrs Rowlands, who have been in charge of the Salvation Army work in New Plymouth for nearly two years, have received orders to farewell on Sunday next. It is understood their new appointment is to be Newton, Auckland. Adjutant Bayliss, of Levin, will succeed them here.
The following New Plymouth candidates were successful in the Accountants' Preliminary examination ("a" means passed the whole examination, and numbers indicate three, or more subjects credited):—N. B. Bellringer (CJ, B. A. Blundell (A), E. B. Mac Donald (5), F. G. Northern (A.), J. B. Wilson (A.). It is understood (says the Wellington Times) that the Prince of Wales, who is to visit the Dominion shortly, will arrive in New Zealand rather later than was originally anticipated—possibly well ou in April next. No definite information is yet to hand as-to the probable date of his arrival. Reference was made by the Prime Minister on Tuesday to the rumors recently in circulation that His Honor the Chief Justice'(Sir Robert Stout), was about to retire from the Supreme Court Bench to take the position formerly held by the late Sir Joshua Williams on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, nnd that Sir Francis Bell (the AttorneyGeneral) is to become Chief Justice. Mr. Massey stated that there was no truth in the rumor of the elevation of Sir Robert.
A large gathering' of the lady member of Hawera St. John Ambulance Association anil Bed Cross Society, presided over by Mrs H. T. Lovell, took place on Tuesday afternoon, for the purpose of -welcoming home Mrs H. Foyster, the lady president, who has returned to Hawera after about four years' war work abroad. Opportunity was also taken to give a welcome to Miss Louise Mack, V.A.D., and Mrs E. B. Bates and Miss Bates, and Mrs R. Campbell, former members, who are at present in Hawera. A very pleasant afternoon was spent.—Star.
The late Professor Maelaurin, whose death is reported from America, was a New Zealander witli a brilliant scholastic record. He had been president of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology since 1909. He was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and from the New Zealand University went to Cambridge and Strassburg. He held the position of Professor of Mathematics in the Victoria College, Wellington, from 189S to 1905, and was dean of the Faculty of Law in New Zealand from 1905 to 1907. In 1907 he went to Columbia Universitvj New York, as Professor of Mathematical Physics, and there secured the degrees of doctor'of science and doctor of laws. He is the author of several scientific works. He married Miss Young, of North Auckland, and there are two children. Dr. ,T. S. Maelaurin, Wellington, is a brother of the late professor, who was one of the most brilliant students and educationalists New Zealand ever turned out. It may be mentioned that a supporter of the Massachusetts Institute presented Dr. Maelaurin with a £•20.000 residence on his decision to taV« up the position-of President of the co'-
