THE HALF-HOLIDAY.
THE POSITION IN TAHANAKI. Regarding the Saturday half-holiday movement, the Hawera Star editorially refers to the fact that New Plymouth has decided upon Saturday, Stratford and Hawera aje both favorable. Hawera and Patea Counties have declared to the week-end day, leaving Eltham practically the only break in the chain from New Plymouth to Wanganui. It is quite apparent (continues the Star) that throughout New Zealand the drift of opinion runs strongly in favor of the week-end holiday, and that it is only a matter of time for the Legislative to give effect to the popular wish. But meanwhile the great bulk of Taranaki is ready to anticipate legislative action, and we cannot find any good reafion why Hawera or Eltham should stand out. There may be gome •inconvenience to country people until ihey get used to a good many new things lately, such as going for their own bread and meat, and other things, doing with filbs of sugar at. a time, and for many day' together being unable to buy .anything at all. We grumble, but submit, and do not suffer very much. The Saturday half-holiday probably will not be any real hardship except to"very few, and it is greatly desired by the' large majority. So it has to come. Let it be accepted voluntarily and pleasantly, instead of under compulsion.
