THE CHESS TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Jan. 5. In the eleventh round of the chess tourney Andei.-on drew with Hicks, Severne beat Helling, and Connell drew with Faulknor. THE WELLINGTON TRAM SMASH. Wellington, Jan. 5. The inquest on the bodies of the three victims of the tramway fatality opened to-day, and after formal evidence had been taken was adjourned until Monday next. It was stated that Motorman Small was in good health at the time of the accident.
A BANKER'S WARDING. Auckland, Jan. 5. Mr. Harold Beauehamp, chairman of the Bank of New Zealand, has returned from his European tour. He says the British nation is indulging in a riot of expenditure and less work, and that unless the workers of Britain increase their output, the alternative is a short way to bankruptcy. THE PAYMENT OF BONUS. Christchurch, Jan. 5. The Arbitration Court, judgment in connection with an application by a number of union; fo: payment of overtime or bonus has been filed in the Supreme Court, The application was refused by President Stringer, who stated that the court fixed the ba,sie wage, the bonus being an independent help to meet the increased cost of living.
