Mr. Winston Churchill, speaking- at Sunderland, gave an optimistic survey of the country which he said was on the high road to recovery and quickly getting into ita stride. Manufacture was expanding and orders at home and abroad were steadily increasing. Expenditure was rapidly decreasing.—Aus.N.Z. Cable Assn. RAILWAYMEN'S WAGES. London, Jan. 3. Newspapers unofficially report that the negotiations for standardising railwaymen's wages which have been proceeding sinp the October strike, have resulted In a further increase of the war bonus by five shillings weekly, making it 38s in all grades until September, after which it will be periodically increased or reduced one shilling for every five per cent increase or reduction in the cost of living, but wages plus bonus permanently remain at least double the pre-war wages. Thus the lowest paid porter will receive .vCs weekly until September, compared with 18s pre-war. and the subsequent minimum must never fall below 4!ls.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. LONGEVITY RECORDS.
London, Jan. 2. Remarkable longevity records during 1919 have raised a discussion on one of the more pleasant effects of the war. Doctors and insurance experts agree that rationing lias rejuvenated thousands and eliminated surplus fat where compulsory economy,.and high prices meant only a reduction of the quantity of food taken, not accompanied by a decline of its nutritive qualities. Last year's obituaries in Great Britain included 284 centenarians and nonagenarians.— United Service.
