TWO POLITICIANS KNIGHTED.

C.M.G. I''OR PREMIER'S SECRETARY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Cliris (.church, Doc. 31. The Governor-General has beeu advised that the King has been graciously pleased to confer tho following honors on the occasion of the New Year: Knight Commander of the Moßt Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.). —The Hon. William Herbert Herries. Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of 'British Empire (K.8.E.). The Hon. Robert Heaton Rhodes. Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Miclmel and Saint George (C.M.G.).—The Hon. Maui Pomare; Frank David Thomson (private secretary to the Prime Minister).

Sir W. 11. Herries has had a distinguished political career. He was first elected a member of Parliament in 1890, and has sat continuously since. Since the Massey Government came into power Sir William lias been Minister for Railways. Sir William was horn in London itL 1856, and coining to New Zealand in 1881, he settled in the Te Aroha district.

Sir' R. Heaton Rhodes in another prominent politician and has held Cabinet rank in the Massey Government. During the war he took a leading part in organising Red Cross matters, and did splendid work In Egypt and England as head of the New Zealand Red Cross activities. A member of a well-known Canterbury family, Sir Heaton Rhodes was born at Lvttelton in 1861, and after being educated in England he returned to New Zealand and entered Parliament in 1899. Sir Heaton served in the Soutli African War, gaining tho Queen's Medal with four clasps. Mr. Frank Thomson is well-known throughout New Zealand- as private secretary to successive Prime Ministers. From the Government, service he joined the secretarial staff of the late Mr. R. J. Seddon, and became assistant private i secretary. He was private secretary to Sir Joseph Ward throughout his premiership, and has served Mr. Massey in a similar capacity since the Reform Party came into power. The Hon. Dr. Pomare, C.M.G., is the member of the Executive Council representing the Native race and Minister in charge of the Cook Islands. He was bom at Pahou, Taranaki, in January, 1870. Nineteen years ago he wa3 appointed a Native Health Officer, and in the general election of 1911 was returned to Parliament as tho representative of the Western Maori district. On tho formation of the Massey Ministry in 1912 he was appointed member of the Executive Council, without portfolio, representing the Native race.

Sir George Riddell (Gnc of the leading newspaper proprietors of London, and director of the numerous journalistic concerns). ' Sir Albert Stanley (Until recently President of the Board of Trade). Sir James Buchanan (Head of the well known whisky distillers). PRIVY COUNCILLOR. Mr. W. A. Watt (Who was actingPrime Minister of Australia during the absence of Mr. W. M. Hughes). KNIGHTHOOD. Professor Arthur Schuster (Seeretary of the Royal Society). His Highness the Maharaja of Jam Sahel), better known as Ranjitsinhji, the well-known cricketer.
