LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS. FIRST POLL IN 1922. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Attorney-General states that the proclamation bringing the Legislative Council Act into operation will*be issued in the next Gazette. Sir Francis Bell added that the Act will come into force on 31st January, 1021, and the first election of members of the Legislative Council will take place at the general election of 1922.
The election will be held on the proportional representation system in four large constituencies covering the whole of New Zealand. The first election will bo of twentv members only, one half of the House. The present constitution of the Legislative Council continues in force until the coming into operation of the new! Act, and, therefore, an appointment for a term of seven years can be made to the Council until 31st January, 1921, after which date no appointments can be made.
