BLACK AUSTRIA.
HUNGER AND NO WORK. STARVING CHILD BEGGARS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright, Received Dec. 29, 7.45 p.m. London, Dec. 28. The Vienna correspondent of the Sun« day Express states that scurvy, hunger and typhus are beginning to devastate the population, of which ninety per cent, ate only sour cabbage for Christmas dinner. Seventy-four thousand unemployed tramp the streets. The police are armed with revolvers, and gtlard every railway waggon to prevent looting. The fashionable quarter swarms with starving and barefooted children pitiably begging. Wounded soldiers lie on the pavements exposing stumps of limbs, which are suppurating owing to lack of surgical treatment, while big hotels are filled with overfed and bloated food pro-, fiteers, who are responsible for sucking the last drops of Austria's lifeblood.— United Service.
