UNITED STATES AND TREATY.

COMPROMISE NEGOTIATIONS PROCEEDING. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received Dec. 26, 12.10 a.m. Washington* Dec. 23. Senator Lodge and Underwood have conferred, and it is reported that steps towards a treaty compromise are propressing satisfactorily.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received December 2d, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Dec. 22.

Senator G. M. Hitchcock, Leader of the Democrats in the Senate, in a statement, said: "I have personally conferred with many Republican senators, all of whom pvinee an earnest desire to see the Treaty compromise worked out. Article Ten was still the difficult point on which to get agreement, but I feel sure President Wilson will accept a mild reservation of Article Ten, but he will not agree to the exclusion of the Article and the covenant. There is considerable misunderstanding concerning President Wilson's exact position regarding the Treaty. I am certain he will accept a compromise, though he will not offer the way."—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
