CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
QUARTERLY MEETING.
The quarterly meeting of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce was held last night. The president (Mr. A. Goldwater) presided, and there was a good attendance.
Correspondence was received from the Auckland .Railways .League in regard to a Parliamentary .tour of a portion, of the North island, and asking for the support of the Chamber in the matter.-—lt was decided to reply that when, a tour was arranged including Taraoaki in the itinerary the Chamber would be prepared to co-operate. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce wrote regarding the control and operation of tlie New Zealand railways, suggesting the setting up of a board of control consisting of the Minister of Kailways, one member appointed by the Government, 2 by Parliament, one by the agricultural and freezing interests, one by the United Federation of Labor, and one by the employees in the entire staffs of the railway department. The members generally agreed with the suggestion that the proposal should be disctissed at the annual conference of chambers, and it was decided that the Chamber's delegates should give general support to a remit on the question at the next conference.
The Clifton County Council wrote in connection with the proposal for a Wai-tara-Te Kuiti railway line, asking the Bupport of the Chamber to the following resolution:—That in the opinion of thw meeting of settlers in the Okau district, it is in the best interests of the district that a railway route should be surveyed and later authorised; and that the counties of Awakino, Clifton, and Waitomo, be asked to form themselves into a railway league for the furtherance of the proposal. A letter was read from an Auckland Arm of engineers in regard to railway' construction, and it was decided to refer the Clifton County to that firm. A letter was received from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce intimating that a number of copies of an address on "Education Industry and Reconstruction," by Mr. S. E.'Dickinson, principal of St. Andrew's Presbyterian College,' Christchurch, were being forwarded for distribution among the members. Further to previous correspondence that has pasesd between the two institutions, the Trade and Industries Committee of the Royal Colonial Institute wrote stating that they could assure the Chamber oMhe committee's wannest cooperation in any specific matter of mutual interest which it was desired should be raised in the Old Land. The previous correspondence had related somewhat to increased shipping facilities to the Dominion. Mr. F. Hooker was elected a member of the Chamber.
