OBITUARY.

MS. JAMES WADE. Very general regret was expressed in New Plymouth yesterday when it became known that Mr. James Wade, of Westown, had passed away at a private hospital. The late Mr. Wade was a native of England, but emigrated westward in his youthful days, spending some years in farming pursuits in Canada. He came from the northern Dominion to New Zealand many years usn. and took up farming pursuits in North Taranaki, following his occupation on the Mangorei Road for a number of years. The deceased took a, keen Interest in local body matters, being a member of the Road Board for some years and also of the Education Board. An accident which he suffered by being knocked down by a bull, and from which he really never fully recovered, put him out of his activities for some time, but he returned to the Education Board, and war, for some years chairman. His» chief work was done in connection with the Education Board. On his retirement from active farming and from public body work, he settled at Westown, where he continued to reside up to within a short time j of his death. ! lie was a verv highlv respected citizen, and a gentleman of very courteous bearing, and his death will be rewtied ■by the many friends of his family and a lares circle of acquaintances. Deceased was 78 years of age. It will be remembered by many that the late Mr. Wade lost his eldest son some years ago by VlVowning. He followed a. sea-faring life, and had the misfortune to be washed overboard from his ship in the vicinitv of the Sugar Loaves, when approaching New Plymouth. At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education 'Board reference was. made to the death of Mr. Wade, by the chairman (Mr. R. Masters), who paid although his death was not altogether unexpected, it was greatly regretted. The late Mr. Wade had been chairman of the 'Board from'l9o+ to 1911, and a member for some years prior to that. Ho had not been associated with Mr. Wade on the Board, but. knew he had rendered most useful and conscientious service to. the cause of education. He therefore moved the following resolution : "That the regret of the members be recorded on account of the death of Mr. .T. Wade, a former chairman and member of the Board, and that sympathy and condolence be expressed with Mr. Wade's relatives." Mr. Trimble, in seconding the resolution, said he desired to bear testimony to the manner in which Mr. Wade had carried out the work of the Board. He had no special educational attainments, but he earnestly strove to do what he could for the advancement of education. He was withal of a moat kind and courteous disposition.

The motion was carried in the customary manner, and the Board adjourned for half-an-hour, as a mark of ret spect to the -late «h&irnjan
