TARANAKI ENGINEERS.
CONFERENCE AT NEW PLYMOUTH. The half-yearly conference of the Taranaki Branch of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers took place at New Plymouth yesterday, at the Taranaki County Council chambers. Prior to the commencement of business tfie Deputy-Mayor of the borough (Mr. W. A. Collis), extended a welcome to the visiting members of the society. He expressed an opinion that such conferences must do a great amount of good. The interchange of ideas between engineers of the various local bodies would prove of mutual benefit. It would also be of benefit to the ratepayers, who had to find the money for carrying out the schemes of their engineers, because such conferences would devise ways and means for getting better value for the money spent. He hoped the deliberations of the conference would be of benefit to the whole province and in the name of the citizens of New 1./ mouth he welcomed the delegates to the town. (Applause). Mr. H. H. Sharpe, president of the Society, in responding, said he thought the Deputy-Mayor had struck the nail on the head in his remarks. In engineering Blatters things were moving rapidly, and improved methods were required to meet new demands. For this reason the conferences had a very particular value. He appreciated Mr. Collis' very clear idea of the utility of such conferences and thanked him for the cordial welcome extended to the visitors.
