WOUND STRIPES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, No?. 11. It will be of interest to surviving wounded veterans or the Maori and South African wars that they are now allowed to wear wound stripes for campaigns prior to 1914. In reply to correspondence from the Defence Department, Colonel Porter lias been advised that army order 24!), 1910, republished in general orders 430, 131!), extends the privilege of wearing wound distinctions to those wounded in former campaigns, subject to the general orders 243, 1919. Doubt existed as to the intention of the army order which led to the correspondence now favorably replied to. PRISONER'S ATTEMPTED ESCAPE. Christehurch, Nov. 11. Robert Warden appeared in Court this morning charged with assaulting an officer at the Lyttelton Gaol on Sunday and attempting to escape. The accused pleaded guilty 1o both charges. The magistrate ordered the prisoner to be fed on bread and water for 14 days on each charge and to forfeit conduct points equivalent to a year's remission of sentence. On leaving the court Warden said it was his third attempt to escape, but it would not be his last. DEALINGS IN WHEAT. Received November 11, 0.45 p.m. Sydney, Nov. 11. The Wheat Operations Royal Commission continues to excite considerable interest. The accountant, in the coarse of his evidence, said that the total loss on wheat and damage to >vheat while in the liands of the State Wheat Office amounted to £2,389,000. He also said that the holders of 1016-18 wheat had already been overpaid to the extent of £6oß,ooo.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ORIGIN OF A FIRE. Received Nov. 11, 0.40 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 11. The Government is offering £IOOO reward, an insurance office £IOOO, and the Broken Hill South Company £200(1 for information leading to the conviction of the perpetrator of the recent fire in the South Mine. A free pardon is ottered to an accomplice giving information.
