THE GAS SUPPLY.
TEMPORARY STOPPAGE IN NEW PLYMOUTH. There was a temporary stoppage of the gas service in New Plymouth about midday yesterday, owing to coal shortage. The Gas Company, however, were able to replenish their bunlfbrs temporarily within a short time, and the service was resumed after about an hour's delay. Yesterday's failure was purely on account of a supply of coal not reaching the works at the time expected. It is true that during the past few days the company has been surviving on a hand-to-mouth existence, having been borrowing coal locally, because supplies have been diverted from this -to other ports, uo fewer than three boats that were expected here having been sent elsewhere recently.
The position is not likely to be repeated, as the kowhai, with a cargo of 1)0(1 tons, left Greymouth for New Plymouth last night, and she should be here to discharge on Friday morning. The Ivanio, which is also loading at the West Coast, will have a consignment for the local gasworks. She is due here at an early date.
