ELTHAM.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Eltham, Oct. 16. The event of the week is the banquet tendered to returned soldiers, nurses, and their relations, at Mangatoki, which is being held to-night. Whatever Mangatoki does is done well, and great preparations have been made. They are catering for five hundred, so to-night should be a very busy time. Mr. W. A. Curteis, who has been in charge of the school at Mangatoki for some years, has accepted the position of organising teacher under the Education Board. He is a very popular man, taking an active part in anything that has been going on. A gathering took place at his house on Tuesday afternoon, and Mrs. Curteis was presented with a silver teapot by the members of the Ladies' Patriotic Society. At a meeting in the hall in the evening there was a large attendance, and it was decided to open subscription lists and make arrangements for a presentation and farewell social on October 28. Mr. E. Hancock has sold his property, and leaves Eltham next week for Stratford. The election is just beginning to create interest. Mr. Astbury opens next Wednesday and the Reform Party met again yesterday, and, after a lengthy meeting and ballot, decided upon Mr. Oswald Hawken as the representative of the party. - We had a severe frost here last night, and the gardens have suffered generally. There is a likelihood of another to-night, the air being very keen. A suggestion has been made to try and revive the old round-the-Mountain race, with other attractions in the form of motor reliability trials, etc., and a three days' carnival. It will pay ladies to visit Eltham to see the window display of lovely spring millinery and summer wear now showing at ShiptQn's Corner. Pretty hats, up-to-date in fashion and designed for immediate wear. To visit Shipton's is a short cut to economy.—Advt.
