TARANAKI HOSPITAL BOARD.

ATTITUDE OP THE EGMONT COUNTY. - ALLEGED MISLEADING STATEMENTS. After the press was excluded from the Hospital Board's meeting thia week a discussion arose with reference to th'j meeting held in Opunake on September 10 for the' purpose of hearing Mr. reasons why the Egmont County should be formed into a separate hospital district. Strong exception was taken to the following alleged misleading statements made by Mr. O'riiieu : (l)_"That at the present time there is neither hospital nor shelter of any kind in the county where the sick could be attended to, and that they are ignored by the board." Until quite recently a district nurse has' been in Opunake, and a house has been e<mted as a cottage hospital. The cottage was sold and the nurse resigned. Another nurse has been appointed and a suite of rooms rented for her to carry on her work. Meanwhile a grant of land has been applied for with a view to erecting a cottage hospital thereon similar to the one at Uruti. (2) "That, although the county pay large sums of money to the board, the people of the county get next to nothing from the board." Mr. O'Brien knew before this meeting that last year 204 patients from the Egmont County were treated in New Plymouth Hospital, and if necessary another 204 would have been admitted. (3? "The Taranaki Hospital Board will not allow them a cottage hospital." The board has already made application to the Department for a grant of land for this purpose. Plans have also been secured of a similar building as a guide to what is required. (4) "The board contemplates the building of an old people's home at New Plymouth, and their County Egmont share would be £4000." The board has never considered the.erection of a new old people's home. Several hundred pounds were spent last year on the present home, which would not have been done had the board been considering the building of a new home. (5) "The board refuses to give even a part of a nurse's salary." The district nurse is appointed by and is a servant of the board. Therefore her salary is guaranteed by the board. The board expressed their regret that the ratepayers of the Egmont County are being misled by such statements.
