THE TAINUI INQUIRY.

WAS THE SHIP SEAWORTHY? COMPLAINTS BY THE CREW. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night, The nautical inquiry in connection with the loss of the Tainui was continued. John Buchanan Hay, engineer at the New Zealand Refrigerating Company's Wahganui works, gave evidence concerning the condition of the vessel at dne time insulation was carried out. The insulation was certainly air-tight. He had not noticed any effect of saturation of oil by Oregon timber. It was an engineer's duty to report repairs necessary and witness had instructions to carry them out without reference to the head officer. No complaints had been made to him by the captain or the engineer of the Tainui as to fumes from a leakage of benzine. Robert Logan, seaman on the Tainui till March 28th last, said he heard in Lyttelton that the Tainui was to load benzine for Timaru. He considered the vessel was not fit to carry benzine. Be spoke to the captain and subsequently visited the office in Christchurcn, -where he made statements as to repairs required before the Tainui could be considered seaworthy. He had previously made complaints to tlie captain. The manager offered him a bonus to make the trip, and the matters complained of would be attended to on their return, but witness refused and was paid off next day with the crew, none of the deck hands being re-engaged. Th«> aecK hands left the ship as a result of a protest regarding repairs. No boat drill was done. William B. Donovan, fireman, formerly on the Tainui, said when the benzine cargo was taken on board he would not go along the tunnel or into the bunkers with a naked light as the fumes were too strong. Boat drill had been dsSe twice while he was on the vessel.
