NEW PLYMOUTH OBSERVATORY.

TO BE BUILT ON MARS LAUD HILL. The project for the erection of an astronomical observatory for New Plymouth was carried a stage further last night, when the Borough Council sitting as a Marsland Hill Domain Board, passed the necessary resqjutiona authorising the Astronomical Society to eerct an observatory on a site on the Hill, under certain conditions. The terms and conditions were those as set out in the letter from the Minister of Lands, a copy of which has been supplied to the Society. The following further conditions were also imposed:— (a) Tha,t the building be permitted to remain during the pleasure of the Domain Board, but during such period may be controlled by the Society; (b) the Society to undertake to keep the building and fences in good repair, and to remove the same if called upon to dp so by the Board; (e) the Society to undertake to give up possession of the site if and when called upon to do po by the Board.

The secretary of the Society (Rev. 0. Blundell) Wrote intimating that the terms were agreeable to the Society.
