MUNICIPAL CRICKET GROUNDS.
DEPUTATION TO BOROUGH I COUNCIL. A deputation from the North Tarftuaki Cricket Association, consisting of Messrs W. C. Weston, VV. H.'Moyes, E. Whittle, P. Stainton and Yardloy waited on the New Plymouth Council last night, with & view to securing assistance in the provision or maintenance of .cricket grounds. Mr W. H. Moves who acted as spokesman, said since the end or the war there had been a remarkable revival of interest in cricket, and seeing that the association was faecd with the necessity of finding accommodation for thirteen adult teams during the coming season, not to mention junior cricket which hitherto had been non-existent in the town, the question of grounds was exercising the executive somewhat. He rafpr'"-''"to the request made some time ago i.ir assistance in forming a ground at" the racecourse, and said that a considerable amount of financial support had been ofTered for that, but the committee had felt that the cost of maintenance was beyond its power. The only solution of the problem the association paw was for the borough to take over the control of the cricket grounds. This was done at Wan'ganui, where the council received a percentage of the gate money in return and he respectfully submitted that the New Plymouth Countil might do the same. He was of opinion that money spent in that direction would be well spent and would have the approval of ratepayers. Mr Whittle supported Mr Moves. He also* urged that any attempt to get the borough to exchange one of its public reserves for school purposes should be considered in the light of the very urgent need for plenty of sports grounds. With thirteen teams in the competition the association would have difficulty in providing ground for match purposes. In view of the possibilities of the development of a greater New Plymouth he hoped the council would take this matter into consideration if any move was poade for such an exchange. Cr. Clarke asked what area was necessary to make a good ground. Mr Moves replied that 4% acres would provide one ground. A further question was asked by Cr. Clarke as to what grounds the council should lay out. To this Mr Moves replied that the Tukapa ground was one and they bad hoped to get another in the Recreation grounds, but in the event of that being impossible they would suggest on» at the racecourse. The Mayor said he was pleased to know there was a revival of cricket in the district. He was of opinion it was "the" game for young :n:m, and believed that they should play cricket instead of bowls. He said the council would want to know what it was likely to entail so far as financial obligations were concerned. Cr. Clarke suggested that a committee of the council, representatives of the Western Park Committee and the Cricket Association should confer on the matter. , - The Mayor said a committee would be appointed to go into the matter, and the deputation thanked the council &nd withdrew. Councillors Hayden, Hill and Griffiths were appointed to consider the matter.
