FITZROY RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION.

QUARTERLY MEETING. The. first, quarterly 1 meeting of the Fitzroy Ratepayers' Association that -has been held since the inception of the association took place in the Fitzroy Hall on Friday evening. Mr E. Griffiths presided over a moderate attendance «f members. The president gave a verbal report upon the activities of the executive. Regarding a post office at Fitzroy the departmental reply received was to the effect that the business offering was not sufficient to warrant tlie expenditure required to provide a building. The association felt that this was not a satisfactory settlement and considered the population of the suburb was sufficient to give it a just claim to have a post office of its own. The executive was therefore laoking for some other system of pushing the matter ahead, and had written to Mr S. G. Smith, M.P., who was sympathetic. If the meeting had the same feeling it might pass a resolution. Regarding the proposal to lilant: trees in Sackville Street, the Borough Council had agreed to provide protections and the trees were to be planted next year. Tt was now necessary to deciie what species of trees should be planted. An important matter requiring at.ten.tisn was the providing of access to the sea beach from Fitzroy. Beach Street was suggested as a suitable access, but it was in a very rough and ready state at present. The executive was taking action and it was probable that working bees would lie held and the Esrough Council asked far financial assistance. The need for a train shelter at the Strandon sectionend had been referred to the Borough Couscil. and the reply from the Railway Department regarding the posj.bility ef using a portion of the adjofeing railway land f»r a site. A big matter in which Fitzroy was interested was .the acquiring »f the Harbor Board reserve adiacent to the beach as a public pleasure ground. No definite reply had come to hand, but the matter was still receiving attention. Several other -small matters were also reported upon by the president. During discussion ion the subject of the post office, Mr Foote remarked that a number of people did not favor tl.e site on the corner, and the president replied that it was thought wise to cotfine the energies of the association for the present to securmg the placing on 'ln l estimates of the building money. Mr Stanley Smith, in the course if a few remarks, said that an asset of the suburb which was practically neglected was the Fitzroy Bowling and Croquet Club's grounds. On behalf of the club he extended an invitation to members of the association and other residents to attend the official opening on Thursdav. October 30.
