FEDERAL ELECTIONS. Bj lelejrapti.—Press Assn.—Copyrlcht. Sydney, Oct. 6. Senator Gardiner announced definitely that the Federal elections are to be held on December 13.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. 8 HUORS' DAY CELEBRATIONS. Sydney, Oct. 6. At the eight-hour day banquet, speeches were delivered by Labor leaders, including Mr Ryan. Queensland. They were mainly attacks on the National Government for restricting the freedom of the people, and for permitting rampant profiteering. Mr Storey, the New South Wales Labor leader stated that State Nationalists were accumulating a fund of £•250,000 to fight the Labor Party. Notable among the speakers were Dean Talbot, Anglican, and Father O'Rielly, Catholic, both strongly advocating the need for better social conditions and a more equitable share of the fruits of labor for the workman.
Received Oct. 0, 0.50 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 0. weather was fine for the eight hour demonstration and sports. Big crowds witnessed the procession of 75 unions, headed by many returned soldier unionists.
INCREASED SHIPPING CHARGES. Received Oct. C, 9.50 p.m. Sydney, Oct. 6. The increase in wages recently granted to the seamen is to be passed on to the public by an increase from to-day in the fares and freights on inter-State steamers.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received Oct. 7, 1.15 in Sydney, Oct. 6. So far as is known the rise in shipping rates affects the Union and Srddart-Parker Inter-State boats, but nut the New Zealand steamers.
