THE PHOSPHATE ISLAND.
SUGGESTED ACQUIREMENT OF OCEAN ISLAND. By Telegraph— Press Assn.—Copyright. Melbourne, Sept. 25. Mr. Hughes, in the House of Representatives, moving the second reading of the Nauru Bill, said that the Australian phosphate requirements were 200,000 tons annually. The question of acquiring interests in the islands had yet to be dealt with. He was not prepared to admit that the British Phosphates Company had a title to the deposits. It had been suggested by the company that tlw Government should also acquire Ocean Island, which he favored. He concluded by saying that if New Zealand did not accept the agreement now before them the question of acquiring Ocean Island should be dealt with by Australia and Britain.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
