NORTHERN JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. WON BY CLIFTON. Tho match for the supremacy of tho northern junior division took place at Inglewood yesterday between Clifton and Stratford, and evoked a good deal of Interest. The W&itara boys wero considerably heavier than their opponents, and had pace and skill with their weight., proving too many for the Strait- y.\ team, whose smarter backs had little opp tunity to get going. It was really a contest between the Clifton forwards and the Stratford backs, and tho forwards got the verdict by 17 points to 5. Just after starting, Berg, as the result of a pretty passing bout, got over for Stratford and Collins converted. A llttlo later Taylor scored from a forward rush and kicked the goal himself. He also subsequently kicked a magnificent goal from a difficult angle. In the second half Stratford made vigorous efforts to equalise things, penning the Waitara players In their twenty-five, but the defence waa too good, and then tho Clifton forwards swept down tho field." Soon afterwards, Lye, from a passing rush, scored, tho hick proving abortive. Prom loose play and fast following up,, Llmmer scored, Taylor converting. | Mr. P. Julian efficiently controlled the game. ' CABBING SHIELD MATCH. The following team has been chosen to repre* i sen* Tukapa juniors against Star juniors !o 'defence of tho Carbine Shield, on the Recreation Grounds to-morrow, at 3 p.m.: i Qulckfall, Stohr, Boswell, Goodacre, Hart, It. Hooker, Bodmin, Gush, Evans, Gardiner, Crone, i Davis. Gilbert, Kirk, Qulckfall. Emergencies: McLean, Boulton, and Morrison. Referee, Mr. D. Johnson, WELLINGTON v. AUCKLAND. The Dominion, in reporting the above match, states: Prom what had been Heard on all sides before the match, it was anticipated that Wellington would have to exert themselves to prevent tho Northerners from j Winuing. As a matter of fact Wellington I could scarcely have' had a more easy victory. I They outclassed their opponents in all de- ■ partmont3, and cave a really flue display. The I play was very fast, find tairly open. In both: spells Wellington had the best of the game, i but had their goal-kicking been of a higher! order they must have won by at least nine more points than they actually obtained. Green, the wing-forward, was entrusted with several of the kicks, but owing to his right ley being bad his attempts were faulty. The Wellington backs fielded exceptionally well, j and the forwards were on the ball the whole ; time. In addition their passing was also good. When the Auckland backs got (ho ball they showed themselves to be good sprinters, and their passing was also good, but it was not up to tho standard of the Wellington rear division. The Auckland representative team arrived at New Plymouth, by the mail train last night, being unable to obtain a permit to travel! by tho Main Trunk line. They will probably | go north by the Jiarawa cm Saturday. I
