Mr. Hughes, • speaking at a welconv, said that if the Australian army had been properly reinforced at least 10,000 of those who had died in France would have been alive to-day. Sir John Cook confirmed Mr. Hughes' statement that lie had received no intimation regarding the visit of the American fleet, but added that it would be heartily welcomed.

Received Sept. 15, 10.10 p.m. [ Sydney, Sept. 15. The tea merchants have applied to the Necessary Commodities Commission to increase the price by 3d a pound or remove the restrictions. The commission recommend the latter course, provided the merchants report the proposed increase. SHIPPING SERVICE WITH JAPAN. Received Sept. 16, .1.15 a.m. Sydney, Sept. 15. The N.Y.K. cargo service between Japan, New Zealand and Australiu is resuming. The first steamer is due I at Wellington by the end of October.
