ARTERIAL ROADS.
SHOULD BE CHARGED WON CONSOLIDATED FUND. A TIRE TAX FAVORED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The question of main arterial roads was discussed at the Municipal Conference to-day. Mr. Leed» (Newmarket) moved that the time had arrived when the Government should nontrol the main arterial roads of the Dominion with a view to the formation of permanent highways, that all loc*l bodies be urged to co-operate in the work of putting the main arterial roads in such a permanent condition in respect to the surface and width as to car*y with safety the rapidly increasing number of power driven vehicles. • An amendment was moved by Miss Melville (Auckland) that in view of the altered circumstances brought about by the growth of motor traffic, the cost of making and maintaining the main arterial roads of the Dominion be a charge upon the Consolidated Fund, and that the Government be urged to take whatever steps are necessary to bring this aboutAfter discussion the original remits wera withdrawn, and the amendment carri*d. The conference affirmed the principle of a tyre tax.
