WINDY NAPIER.
HEAVY GALES AND SEA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Sept. 11. There wes an easterly galo at Napier last night. The sea was beaten into high fury, and many small vessels in the bay experienced considerable difficulty in reaching port. About dusk an unknown four-masted schooner put in an appearance in the bay, but has not been seen since. It is believed the captain, after [picking up his beariugs, managed to beat out to sea again in spite of the exceptional fury of the storm.
The Home liner Otira, in the roailstead, dragged her anchor a couple of ship's lengths, but rode the storm safely. The coastal steamer Tuatu ran ashore at the mouth of the Mohaka River. Stops are being taken to unload the vessel, and a goodly portion is already off. The Arahura, despite the dangerous sea, remained at the breakwater. The gale caused much minor damage in Napier, the fruit trees suffering badly.
