SUCCESSFUL OPENING OP MEETING. I The opening rounds In the New Plymouth Coursing Club's meeting, which took place yesterday at Glenavon, Smart Road, were /ory successful, anil provided an enjoyable afternoon's sport. The arrangements for the meeting were well made, and the details satisfactorily carried out. The club lalij itself out for a* good meeting, and was rewarded with an entry of 21 dogs., Including most of the local favorites, and (hero was a good gatuerlng of spectators lo see the event's. With » few exceptions the liarea prorcd In good condition, and some excellent runs were made, and no kill was made until well down In the nrst round The best course of the aflernoon was undoubtedly that between Gloaming and Gay Lad, There was not so much perhaps In the speed, but the hare made several good turns and was only caught by Gloamlns, with both dogs close upon It, when trying to negotiate a somewhat awkward escape, As !£?. M . ca l ,6s aro fl,t « d "Is practically impossible for a hare to elude capture If. running across the balk, with the dogs in close proximity as It must turn out almost at a right angle In order to get through the oponlng, and thst action alone gave some of the dogs just their chance yesterday. In the second round some of the hares were not so keen as the others, while In some cases the hounds failed entirely to sight the. fleeter animals, and a number of "no courses" were given. Indeed, of the five courses In the round only one was decided pntright, all the others having to be run over twice, and one of them three times. The work of the officials' was In every way satisfactory. Mr. Joe Jenkinson, as judite, gave his decisions without hesitation, and In a manner that was beyond question. Mr. P. Doughty, as allpper, and Mr C. Clarke, as hare slipper, were both mort successful. The meeting continues to-morrow, and the prizemoney and trophy will be paid out at Mr. Nicbol's buildings at night following are yesterday's results :

Rainbow, beat Mr. W. Lowe's Movement. Messrs Bruce and Haskell's King Pol, beat Messrs. Scrivener Bros.' Connie. Mr. A. McGiven's Bill, heat Messrs. Doolsghty and Jarrett's Castle Isle. Messrs. Doolaghty and Jarrett's Shillelagh beat Mr. Crother'3 Clipper. Mr. P. Nlchol's Gloaming, beat Mr. M. Gardner's Gay Lnd. Champion Lass, a bye.
SECOND ROUND. Black Pirate beat Sunspot. Silent Wave beat Commenor. King Pirate beat Rainbow. King Pol beat Kill Champion Lass heat Shillelagh. Gloaming, a bye. The third round takes place to-morrow at 1.30 pm., when Black Pirate meets Silent Wava, King Pirate meets King Pol, and Champion Lass meets Gloaming.
