GENERAL BOTHA.

[General, the Rt. Hon. Louis Botha, PS', L.L.D., was born at Greytown, Natal, in 1803. Ho became a member of the first Volksraad of the Transvaal, in which ho represented Vryheid. He acted as veldt-cornet for the district at tbe beginning of the Anglo-Boer war 'though he opposed Kruger'i war polio/ at the outset), and succeeded General iTounert an Commander-in-Chief of tho Boer forces, which he commanded at the battle of Colenso, and during the rest of the war. He was first Premier of the Transvaal, and first Premier of United South Africa. He attended tha Imperial Conference in England in 1911, and received several honors, being made an Hon. General of the British army i«1012, while in September, 191*,' ht lmcame the commander of the South African forces in the lato war- He quickly subdued a rising of De Wat in ihj autumn of that yean and had a complete triumph over tie tntmy in ' German South West Africa. Hii loyalty to the British Empire after the Union was a splendid tribute to British rule, and his aid at the recent Peace Owference, particularly in regard to thljfcpndatorica concerning the German collies, war. very highly valued.]
