MR HERRIES—"STATESMAN."
i To the Editor. Sir,—David's lament for his son, Absolum was a common or garden wail compared with Mr Herries' grief as to what may happen if "beer" is not carried under his jurisdiction. I want farmers, workers and business men to listen for a moment at the following essentials carried by rail at Mr Henries" dictation: Manifest of s.s. Corrinna by rail from port of New Plymouth, 118 hogsheads beer, weigh 6 cwt to hogshead, 696 cwt; 42 barrels beer, at 4 cwt to barrel, 108 cwt; 23 hogsheads of beer and stout, 138 cwt; and 13 eases etout, weighing about 1J tons., Now, Sir, Mr Herries refuses farmers' and workers' essentials on the trains to-day, and our workmen, carpenters, plasterers, bricklayers, plumbers and painters, will soon cease work because "beer" ia of more consideration to Mr Herries than the welfare of the people. Add 135 hogsheads from Patea for peace celebrations and, think hard.—l am, etc., C. D. SOLE. , Stratford, 7tli August.
