THE COAL SHORTAGE.

To the Editor. Sir,—Quite recently I paid a short visit to the Mokau coalfield, and I was surprised when I saw the millions of tons of good all round coal within easy access of the river, where hundred ton vessels could be navigated with ease. I don't know, I am sure, what the Government is thinking of. Whether it is tlie forthcoming election, or the soon arrival of the Prime Minister, I have no idea, hut I am quite certain it is not the coal shertage. Wake up, I say, and open up the coining Newcastle of New Zealand.—l am, etc., OLD KING COAL.
