HOUSE ACCOMMODATION.
POSITION ACUTE IN HAWERA. The shortage of house accommodation in Hawera is becoming very acute, and at every sitting of the local Court during the past month actions have been taken for possession of tenements, consequently the tenants have to look round for accommodation which is pretty •hard to obtain (says the Star). There was another case called on in the.Magistrate's Court on Friday morning, when 'the defendant was a married man with seven children. Defendant said he had tried every available means to rent a house and to obtain even temporary accommodation, but without Biiccess. j. "Unless a man has £IOO or £2OO to put down on a house he has his house sold over his head," said Mr. P. O'Dea, counsel for defendant. "It i'j pretty hard /upon poor people or mer. wuu largo families." The Magistrate: Could you not go into lodging? Defendant: No. They would not take a man with a family of seven children. The Magistrate: Have you tried? Defendant: No; ij,'B useless. The Magistrate? It seems incredible that you cannot even find temporary accommodation. The Magistrate pointed out that, defendant. had had two months in which to find accommodation. He would have to make an order as the purchaser was entitled to get his house. He would make an order for possession within 14 days. Defendant: Where will I take my family of seven children if 1 cannot get accommodation within fourteen days? The Magistrate: That is your business.
