PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
PEACE ILLUMINATIONS. STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES ALLEN. Dy Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The attention of the acting Prime Minister was drawn by a reporter today to a statement by ,the Mayor regarding the peace illuminations- Sir James Allen said Cabinet's decision was quite definite and applied absolutely to all illuminations which involved the consumption of coal. Thi3 included cases of lighting by gas producer engines. Cabinet regretted to make the decision, but recognised that though the consumption of coal in individual eases might be small every litlte added to the total. They could not permit illuminations which were not in any tray essential when it meant consumption of coal, which was wanted in cottages. Public buildings were included in the prohibition. The only exception was in .the case of illuminations where power was not coal produced; for example, where there were hydro-electric installations.
