RAILWAY FREIGHTS.

INCREASES SAID TO BE CONTEMPLATED. Palmereton North, July 3. ■ Opportunity was taken by Mr. Goldingham at a special meeting of .the Chamber of Commerce tb-day to refer to the matter of railway freights. The Department had, he said, increased •freight rates during the war, and had made increased profits, and. it waa absolutely certain that the Department contemplated making further increases. As a matter of fact, they were working on the proposed new tftHff now, The illcreased railway freights penalised the Inland towns, and it behoved the cliambor to raise its voice in protest imfnediately, ond not wait till the new tariff came into operation. For all practical purposes any increase in the railway tariff must be borne almost entirely bv people in inland towns. Mr, Goldinghiiln concluded by moving: "That the chamber views with serious concern the proposal to materially increase railway freights, as it simply means increased taxation on the population residing outside the eeaports." The resolution, which was endorsed on all sides, was adopted, after a short dis-, Mission. It. was decided to forward copies of the resolution to all inland chambers of commerce for immediate action and to submit it to the Mihister and. the General Manager of Railways.
