FOOTBALL.

THE HIGH SCHOOL MATCH. Tho High School boys performed very creditably against Hawera Juniors on Wednesday, and fully deserved their win. From the onlooker's point of view, the game was more interesting than the rep. match, especially in the second half, when the schools boys opened up play and threw the ball about and handled it in fi way that delighted everyone. The forwards are quite diminutive in size, appearing about a stone and a half lighter than the boys who did battle against Wnimate Juhiore last year. The >*am, however, did not suffer from this lightness, for a pluckier or more willing lot of forwards never upheld the honor of their school. In the close work they, of course, suffered, but they made up for it in the loose, and their eager and consistent following up afforded a lesson to the senior players and was a treat to witness.

It is rather strange that this year the school canhot put in the field a* heavier lot of forwards. It is not because it is without big boys, for, as a matter of fact, it has some young giants keeping terms, but somehow or other they have shown little aptitude for the game this season, and have been passed over by the coach in favor of the smaller lads. The coach's judgmeht was vindicated by the vanguards' exhibition on Wednesday.

The South Taranaki public have quite ft regard for the school hoys, and gave Uiem a great hearing. This is not surprising, for the school contains quite a number of Hawera boys, the captain of the team (Osborne), who, by the way, kicked a magnificent goal and scored a meritorious try, being the son of a leading Hawera resident. The school, of course, is not a New Plymouth one, and it iB a pity a parochial name is attached lo a Bchool that is essentially a Taranaki college, and deserves, by its record on the athletic field and in the students' room alike, to be dignified by t'.mt name.
