FIRES.
VALUABLE HAYSTACK BURNED DOWN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. £BSO, was burned to the ground at Papatoetoe last eveniug. The hay was the property of A. E. Coe, of Auckland. The police are making inquiries in regard to the fire.
A HAWERA COTTAGE BURNED.
The Hawera County Council's cottage at Tumturu Road, occupied by Mr. H. Holtham, county employee, was destroyed by fire at seven o'clock yesterday morning. The family were about to sit down to breakfast when one of the children noticed smoke issuing from the passage. Investigation discovered the tire in the front sitting room. Mr. Holtham endeavored to extinguish the flames, which apparently had a good hold, but Was unsuccessful. The house was- totally destroyed, together with practically all the contents. The cottage consisted of four rooms, with two porches, and was built of wood and iron. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The building was insured for £350 in the New Zealand Insurance Office, and the contents for £75 in the Eagle, Star, and Office. Some mouths ago the occupants had a nastly experience, when the chimney was struck by lightning and about eix feet of the upper part demolished, — Star. .
