HURRICANE AND TIDAL WAVE.

DAMAGE IN TONGAN GROUP. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The Talune, which arrived this afternoon, brings further news of the recent hurricane and tidal wave in the Tongan group. The most serious damage was at Haapai. There were three distinct tidal waves, the third going 453 feet inland. Smaller waves followed for a period of 24 hours. Several small vessels were wrecked, and the Government lighter, loaded with copra, was washed to sea and wrecked on a reef six miles away, while another lighter was lost altogether. The American schooner, Otelia Fjord, loading timber, had about 20,000 ft. of her cargo washed away. All the Government premises on the beach were practically wrecked at Nukualofa. The store on the beach was gutted. Two small islands disappeared altogether.
