COST OF TARRING ROADS.

REPORT TO THE NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL. The engineer (Mr W. H. Cook) submitted a report to the New Plymouth Borough Council on Monday night, on the matter of the cost of tarring work, etc., in which he said he had analysed the cost of work done in the following streets and submitted a report dealing with such costs, chiefly in connection with Avenue, Eliot, Powderham, Wallace Plaee and Tnkapa roads. In August, 1017, estimates were prepared for tar-sealing certain roads to varying widths, after they had been resurfaced. The actual sealing work did not take place until the beginning of the presentyear. For a width of 12 feet (or 88 square yards area) the estimated cost was from 8d to 9d per square yard. Certain causes contributed to the cost exceeding the estimates, which he enumerated. The following shows the cost, estimated cost, and areas sealed: 29.330 square yards estimated for £ll3l 2s 4d; 35,520 square yards sealed, £1862 5s Id; increase, £7ll 2s 9d. Although the works have cost mora they have been well done and should not be costly to maintain. The tar work is the second lowest in cost in the district and but for the extra charges put against them would in all probability be as low as any.
