REPATRIATION.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, May '2B. Reference to the question of repatriation way made by the Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald last.night at a dinner to the delegates of the Wellington Farmers' Provincial Union. So far as giving the returned soldier his due, said tlie Minister, we know it is absolutely impossible to assess in money the sacrifices the soldiers of this country made. We do not mean we are doing all that the soldier is entitled to perhaps, but we are doing all that the country can possibly do as far as cur means will allow. Some gentlemen, who had gathered together in one of the southern cities, were talking a good deal about what ought to bo done, but they never said anything about what had been done. Every member of repatriation committees was trying to do his best for the returned men. The Minister of Lands waii in a very difficult position, becatiso he had to get the right position at the right price. To put soldiers on the land with success was no easy thing to do. The Government did not want to put soldiers on the land where they might not be a success.
