Lady Ward is expected to leave England in about a fortnight, and will probably arrive in New Zealand about July 21. Dr. H. W. Cleary, Roman Catholic Bishop of Auckland, is now reported to be much improved in health. He has been ill in a private hospital for six weeks. A Washington cablegram tays that it is expected Mr Lloyd George will visit the United States in October to attend the opening of the League of Nations. Mr A. H. Johnstone has been appointed a member of the High School Board to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr D. Hutchen. Mis. J. Tuohy has received advice that her son, Pvte. Tom Tuohy, of the 19th Reinforcements, returns to New Plymouth .to-morrow evening. A cable from Paris states that President Wilson, speaking at a Pan-Ame-ricaji banquet, hinted that he did not intend to stand as a candidate for another presidential term.—Aus.-N.Z. Cablo Assn. Captain Deare, very well known in shipping circles, died a few days ago. He came to New Zealand some fifty yearß ago. He had command of several coastal vessels, but some years ago he took employment on the Wellington waterfront

At Eltham on Tuesday evening a farewell social was tendered the Rev. R. H. Hobday, who is leaving for Wellington. The Oddfellows* Hall was well filled with friends of all denominations Speeches were delivered expressing the general regret at Eltham losing the services of the reverend gentleman by Adjutant Scotney,Rev. jHoskin (Methodist) Rev Camp, bell (Knox Church), and Messrs.
