Replying to the toast of his health, he made special referenoe to the work of the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps in France, and the treatment most likely to be appreciated by the soldiers returning to New Zealand. Many people could write a cheque for .GSO or so, but it was persona! service that was wanted. It was better to give a pound or two, and ensure, by personal service and human sympathy, that it was being well spent for the benefit of the soldiers, than simply to write a cheque for £SO and do nothing more.
