THE RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
CLEARING THE WRECKAGE. Ohakune, May 17. The cause of the train smash near Taihape still remains a mystery, as the only two who can throw light on the matter are in hospital at Taihape too ill to make a statement at length. The guard, Batty, is in a state of collapse, and the fireman, J. M'Kenna, is likewise in a very bad condition. He was badly burned by the escape of steam ami boiling water, but, though hia vitality is very low, hopes are entertained that he will recover.
More than half the wreckage lias been cleared away, but the considerable task 1 of removing the engine has not yet been completed. Passengers, mails and luggage are being transferred most expeditiously from one train to the other. The authorities cannot understand the failure of the brakes.

The head office of railways is advised that the work of clearing the Main Trunk line of the wreckage of the runaway goods train at Mataroa is expected to be completed to-night, or at latest to-morrqw. • •
