THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
TROUBLE AHEAD, (From Our Own Correspondent) Wellington, May 13. The deputation that interviewed Sir i James Allen to-day on behalf of the locomotive men took a very firm tone. The speakers said definitely that their branch of the railway service was going to strike unless the Department came a good deal nearer to meeting their demands that it had done so far. The act-Prime Minister promised to bring the matter before Cabinet speedily, but he did not indicate iiny intention to apply. pressure to the Minister for Railways. The position obviously is delicate. If the offer already made to the locomotive men and so firmly rejected by them is reconsidered, then the other branches of the railway service will demand similar concessions, and the whole question of railway wages and conditions will have to be re-opened.
